Birth of the band

The Charley Rose Trio was born from the meeting of pianist Enzo Carniel, drummer Ariel Tessier and saxophonist Charley Rose in Strasbourg Saint-Denis, a working-class Parisian neighborhood where a rich poly-cultural life abounds. "A cartography of psychic zones" as well as a wide spectrum of exploration of sound and musical genres, this is how their credo is defined. The trio proposes a music full of contrasts, seeking homogeneity but only in its own sound. In phase with a jovial self-deprecating lightness, with the enveloping softness of the melancholy or a certain savagery which could be expressed with the wire of the compositions, the musicians deliver themselves and reveal their interiority by the prism of a galloping subjectivity. Together, they form a group that creates aesthetically free compositions, liberated from stylistic constraints but above all deeply expressionist. They are accompanied by Wolfgang Muthspiel, an Austrian guitarist who has played with the greatest: Gary Peacock, Paul Motian, Gary Brunton, Dhaffer Youssef, Ambrose Akinmusire, Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier and Brian Blade. An interesting artistic approach for an unconventional band: a polymorphic saxophone that deconstructs its sound, from lyrical voice to crackling elytra, an almost immanent drummer like a fire of life in everything and a vertiginous, sidereal and telluric piano, which can also generate basses by analogical keyboard, thus opening a door towards current music, pop and many others of today. This first opus is released by Déluge, a label and collective imagined by musicians for musicians, very active on the hexagonal jazz scene, which defends creative music through its discographic projects or programming (Alexis Valet Quintet, Le Jardin, Theorem of Joy, Les Diluviennes, Montreuil Jazz Festival...). An album in love with the music in the broad sense of the term, which embraces a multitude of aesthetics that takes this fantastic vibratory phenomenon.

Charley Rose claims to stand at the crossroads of rock, free jazz, and jazz music. He is also a great enthusiast of 20th-century music (Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Ligeti...). These interests led him to create the Larchey Zore Quartet, an experimental group that grapples with extreme forms of music. In 2016, he founded the Charley Rose Trio alongside Enzo Carniel and Ariel Tessier. Their first album was released under the Déluge label in 2018, and a second one will be released on the Menace label in June 2023. They are winners of the Jazz Migration #7 and toured many festivals in France and Europe in 2022.

Since 2018, he has been a part of the sextet of a French icon of contemporary jazz piano: Benoît Delbecq and the Multiplexers.

He is also the co-leader of the Perceptions Trio, in which he experiments with effect pedals to introduce an element of randomness as an additional parameter for improvisation. An album is slated for release in early 2024.

His solo work, "Résonance de la sensation," focuses on the relationship between painting and music and is inspired by Gilles Deleuze's work "Logique de la Sensation," which discusses the paintings of Francis Bacon. It will be released at the end of 2024.

Charley Rose has performed at numerous festivals around the world, on four continents, both as a leader and as a sideman.

Enzo Carniel

Enzo Carniel is a French pianist born in 1987. His research and all his collaborations give birth to the quartet "House of Echo" where long improvised tracks and compositions are mixed.

Influenced by Paul Bley, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett, and the great pianists of the history of jazz, he tries to explore the sound palettes and the intrinsic possibilities of the piano. His approach is based on the birth in the present moment of musical ideas, in the non-judgmental aesthetic, a "raw" approach to improvisation using all his influences and sensations.

In 2014, in collaboration with the label NoMadMusic, he recorded are first solo piano record called Erosions.
On September 1st, 2017, he released the second opus of his quartet House of Echo, Echoïdes on the label

Jazz&People label. The record is acclaimed by the press and media. He recently performed alongside Joe Sanders, Scott Tixier Logan Richardson, Jozef Dumoulin and many others...

At first a classical percussionist, Ariel decides to study jazz drums. From then on, passionate about this music, he perfected his learning thanks to Georges Paczynski's classes and later graduated from the CNSM of Paris.
A very active musician on the Parisian scene, he regularly performs in France and abroad with numerous groups, mainly from the young generation of current jazzmen, but also with renowned musicians such as bassist Riccardo Del Fra and saxophonist Pierrick Pedron. He also had the chance to play with some great American jazzmen like Eddie Gomez, Dave Liebman, Glenn Ferris and Wynton Marsalis. He won several national competitions including the "Tremplins du Sunside" (1st prize as a soloist) in September 2011, and "Jazz à la Défense" (2nd and 1st prize as an instrumentalist respectively in June 2011 and 2012).
